How To Support Hōhepa

Management of Assets

Assets are held independently of the Hōhepa Homes Trust Board by authorised investment managers. All Foundation assets are subject to independent audit.

Since its establishment, the Foundation has raised significant funds and has made substantial grants/loans to Hōhepa regions including for building development and special character activities. Although government funding covers most of the core services, there are many additional costs, including those incurred in maintaining Hōhepa’s special character, which must otherwise be covered by fundraising.

The Trust Deed allows for separate funds to be established, for any purpose consistent with the objects of the Foundation. The annual Financial Statements show the balance held in each of the funds.

General Fund

The assets of the General Fund are invested to provide for any purpose consistent with the charitable objects of the Foundation, including the general purposes of the Hōhepa Homes Trust Board and any of the regions in which it operates. This fund has underwritten a number of projects.

Regional Funds

Special funds have been established for each of the regions in which Hōhepa provides services and may only be used within those regions. The assets of each, arising from bequests, donations, and income generated from investment, are invested to provide for the charitable purposes of the region

The emphasis is to build up these funds to provide on-going income and capital to support the work of Hōhepa.

Individual Resident Trust Funds

Hōhepa Trustees Limited is a separate company established by Hōhepa in 2010 which operates for the benefit of residents of the Hōhepa community and acts to provide a facility for the holding of funds on behalf of individual residents as set up by their family.

Families are provided with a twice-yearly summary of the individual Trust’s transactions and balances. Resident Trusts are invested with Milford Asset Management.

How to support Hōhepa and make financial provision for a family member

This Families’ Handbook outlines the process to make a donation/bequest to the Foundation or to set up an individual resident Trust.

It also contains useful information for families on general issues around supporting the rights of people with an intellectual disability.
