Hawke's Bay > Vocational and Community Life

Adult Residents have daily commitments to work – continuing their skill learning and social interaction through participation in a range of craft, farming/land use and community based activities. Residents can engage in a variety of these supported activities through their week. Some progress to working beyond the Hohepa community, such as engaging in programmes at the Eastern Institute of Technology or working in a small factory.

A Day Service programme is a support based programme for residents with medium to high needs.

Quiet Care currently provides four of our elder residents with care during the day. At times an additional two or three others may attend. This venue is a sunny aspect in a peaceful location suitable to cater for the needs of our elder statespersons.

Stone carving is a sought after programme with residents, creating some wonderful pieces of art. A large portion of Hineura rock is currently being carved by the residents to become a centre piece at the front of the new administration building.

Community participation

The green prescription recreation programme run in conjunction with sports Hawke's Bay is proving popular with eight residents accessing the activities each Monday and Thursday in Napier and Hastings respectively.

Residents who participate thoroughly enjoy the opportunity, taking on the challenges and activities of the day, which can include most indoor games such as badminton, volley ball, indoor cricket etc. On fine days the main sports field at McLean Park is available for use by the more able who wish to extend themselves further.

Pride

The first Friday of each month is Estate Day, where all residents are encouraged to help tidy the grounds around the complex. This is a good way to encourage everyone to take pride in their surroundings.

Recycling

All the houses and services departments actively take part. We have a specified building that houses the recycling materials prior to collection by a local firm. Residents participate in managing the recycling, ensuring materials are correctly sorted before the contractor comes to collect materials. The benefit to not only Hohepa but the environment is immense and we are proud to be doing our bit by actually taking a proactive approach.

Residents Council

The last Friday of each Month residents can take the opportunity to meet in a semi formal setting in the hall to discuss any issue they wish - an opportunity to also ask management for their respective views as well as have the chance to put points, ideas, back to the residents.
