Hawke's Bay > Land-use and Organic farming

Farming is an integral part of the Hohepa philosophy and community life - producing healthy food for the community, and providing purpose for the people when they can be involved in the farm activities.

The Hohepa farm operates across the two Hawke's Bay sites - the Clive site is predominantly used for dairying and related production activities, while the Poraiti site land is used mostly for agriculture cropping including a number of hothouse facilities.

As well as serving the community with produce (vegetables, fruit, meat and dairy), the farming activities provide important vocational/work opportunities for residents.  Residents are involved in the full range of farm activities - with the dairying, cropping and gardening etc.

The farm is an excellent form of participation opportunity for our residents. The 'work' is meaningful, there is a wide variety of activities for involvement and the nature of these are relatively straight forward. Residents can build an appreciation of the farm production process bringing the food to their home.

Healthy food production is important for the community, supporting medical and healthy-living principles.

Hohepa is a leader in Bio-dynamic practices – extending its organic farming history, and in a partnership with the Taruna Training College, providing a place where farmers throughout New Zealand are attending courses to gain experience and understanding of Bio-dynamic farming practice which they can apply to their own farms.

Produce from the farm is also sold through the on-site Clive retail shop. Bio-dynamic milk, cheese and yoghurt, fruit and vegetables are all available to the public from the surplus farm production. Sales revenue provides added income for the community.

Produce is also sold through outlets such as the Farmer's Market in Hastings, and Black Barn Market, Havelock North.

The on-site cheesery has, in recent times, gained a high acclaim for the quality of its organic product. For more about bio-dynamic farming visit Taruna College.
